BIO

Zlatko Garac (b. 1973, Osijek, Croatia) is a contemporary sculptor based in Kaštel Lukšić, Croatia, and Bucharest, Romania. He works primarily with heavy steel plates sourced from scrap yards and steel fabrication companies, transforming them into unique sculptures through cutting, welding, bending, and painting. Garac is best known for his minimalist and abstract influences, distinctively incorporating vibrant, hand-painted surfaces inspired by Miró and framed with black and silver elements reminiscent of Mondrian's style. The artist's distinctive approach involves pairing rough steel with polished marble from Croatian quarries, creating a compelling contrast between raw industrial aesthetics and refined, elegant stone.

The subject matter of Garac’s sculptures is characterized by a deep fascination with steel and its varied forms, uncovering the beauty and versatility of this material while infusing it with new meaning. His sculptures often carry messages that touch upon social and political themes, reflecting both everyday events and broader socio-political concerns. Characterized by meticulous manual techniques the sculptures not only present a unique artistic vision but also embody a narrative about the unpredictability of life. Through his distinctive process of “rescuing” steel from its original industrial destiny, the artist brings new meaning and purpose to materials that would otherwise be discarded. His notable projects include two series: the first, consisting of five sculptures, embraces a positive outlook on life through bright, cheerful colors, while the second series incorporates corten steel and explores more complex themes, including politics and religion. He is currently developing his third series, expected to be completed during 2025.

Zlatko Garac’s work is held in private collections internationally, attracting collectors for its unique approach to material and form. While he has yet to exhibit publicly, his sculptures continue to resonate with a diverse audience, reflecting his evolving vision and the powerful narratives embedded within his creations.
